Board of County Commissioners statement regarding election respect and privacy

Board of County Commissioners statement regarding election respect and privacy
Posted on 10/15/2024
On October 15, the Lane County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted a statement reaffirming the importance of respect and privacy in the elections process.

The adopted statement reads:

The Board of County Commissioners affirms the critical role voting plays in shaping the future of our communities. Voting is one of the most important rights and responsibilities available to citizens in the United States.

Discussion and debate can be a lively – and healthy – part of the voting process and should be welcome in any democratic republic; however, we must also remember to treat one another with courtesy and respect.

Each voter in Lane County should be afforded the privacy to cast their vote and return their ballot as they wish. No voter in Lane County should face intimidation when visiting our local Elections Office or an official ballot drop box. Attempts to intimidate are not only counterproductive, they undermine the very foundation of free and fair elections. We are committed to protecting every eligible voter’s right to vote safely and without fear.

Please also treat our election workers with kindness and respect. These dedicated people work tirelessly to ensure that the process is secure, transparent, and fair. They deserve our appreciation and civility, not hostility.

Together, with respect for one another and the democratic process, we can uphold the principles of our democracy and continue to build our future together.
