First Case of Monkeypox Reported in Lane County
07/01/2022
Lane County Public Health is reporting the first presumed case of monkeypox virus infection in a person who lives in Lane County, identified by testing at the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory. The test sample has been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for final confirmation. The patient is an adult and did not have a travel history to an area with known cases.

Measles outbreak declared "over"
12/11/2019
Lane County Public Health (LCPH) announced today the most recent measles outbreak has been declared over. Due to the highly contagious nature of measles (1 case can result in 16 additional cases in an unvaccinated population), a single case is cause for concern and can trigger an outbreak designation. Thanks to a coordinated effort from the Oregon Health Authority, LCPH, and community partners, that single case of measles in a Lane County resident did not spread further.

Confirmed Measles Case in Lane County

Testing has confirmed two new measles cases in Oregon, one of whom resides in Lane County. Both patients traveled on the same flight into Portland International Airport as a confirmed measles case on Saturday, October 12.

OHA: Modernization funds fuel new approaches

Public health modernization funds fuel new approaches to prevent, fight infectious disease outbreaks. The Oregon Legislature’s $5 million public health modernization investment is allowing counties to partner with each other and share staff resources so they can better prepare for and respond to communicable disease threats, a new report by the Oregon Health Authority found.

Lane County Public Health Sends Out 1,606 Exclusion Day letters; Hosts 2-Day Walk-In Exclusion Day Immunization Clinic

To help parents get their child’s immunizations up-to-date for this year’s Exclusion Day, Lane County Public Health’s (LCPH) Communicable Disease section will be hosting a 2-day immunization clinic, Tuesday, February 20 and Wednesday, February 21. Every year, Lane County Public Health officials review more than 50,000 records in order to make sure children’s immunizations are up-to-date. For those children whose immunization record is incomplete, a letter has been sent out to their parents asking them to schedule the required immunizations for their child.

Community members urged not to use kratom
11/21/2017
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a strong warning last week to consumers to stay away from the botanical product known as kratom, citing 36 deaths linked to products containing the substance. Since kratom has not been approved by the FDA for many of the uses it is being advertised for, and is available in Lane County without age restriction, Lane County Public Health (LCPH) is urging residents not to purchase or use kratom until the FDA has made a final determination regarding its safety.

During the 2016-2017 flu season, Lane County saw an alarming prevalence of flu throughout the county and, as a result, double-digit deaths attributed to influenza. Getting an annual flu vaccine, and getting it early in the season, is the first and best way to protect yourself, your family and your community from the flu.

Lane County Public Health Reminds Community Members to Prepare for Extreme Heat

Temperatures are forecasted to surpass the century mark this week, giving rise to unique heat-related illnesses. Heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn and heat rash, happen when the body is not able to properly cool itself. While the body normally cools itself by sweating, during extreme heat this might not be enough. In these cases, a person’s body temperature rises faster than it can cool itself down. This can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs.
